FIRE IN DREAMLAND

FIRE IN DREAMLAND

Sunday, July 1

On Coney Island, in the aftermath of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy, a disillusioned do-gooder named Kate meets Jaap Hooft, a charismatic European film-maker who sees in the devastation wrought by the storm an opportunity to make a work of art about another disaster that struck Coney Island some hundred years before: the 1911 fire that started in the amusement park known as Dreamland, burning it to ashes from which it never arose.

TEENAGE DICK

TEENAGE DICK

Sunday, July 1

Teenage Dick was commissioned and developed by Apothetae, a company dedicated to plays that explore and illuminate the "Disabled Experience."A brilliantly hilarious take on Richard III, Shakespeare’s classic tale of power lust, TEENAGE DICK reimagines the most famous disabled character of all time as a 16-year-old outsider in the deepest winter of his discontent: his junior year at Roseland High. Picked on because of his cerebral palsy (as well as his sometimes creepy Shakespearean way of speaking), Richard is determined to have his revenge and make his name by becoming president of the senior class. But as he manipulates and crushes the obstacles to his electoral success, Richard finds himself faced with a decision he never expected would be his to make: is it better to be loved or feared?

TWELFTH NIGHT

Tuesday, July 17

In celebration of five extraordinary years of Public Works, a Public Theater initiative that invites communities across New York to create ambitious works of participatory theater, Free Shakespeare in the Park presents a re-imagining of Public Works’ 2016 musical adaptation of TWELFTH NIGHT for a full five-week run in Central Park. Professional artists and two rotating ensembles of community members from all five boroughs will perform together on the Delacorte stage in this enchanting comedy about Viola, a young heroine who washes up on the shores of Illyria, disguises herself as a man, is sent to court a countess, and falls in love with a Duke.

Featuring music and lyrics by critically-acclaimed songwriter Shaina Taub, this very special TWELFTH NIGHT is a unique partnership between two Public Theater programs that exemplify The Public’s commitment to radical inclusion. Oskar Eustis, The Public’s Artistic Director, and Kwame Kwei-Armah, incoming Artistic Director of London’s Young Vic, helm this unforgettable musical about love in all its many disguises.

TWELFTH NIGHT

Wednesday, July 18

FIRE IN DREAMLAND

FIRE IN DREAMLAND

Thursday, July 19

On Coney Island, in the aftermath of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy, a disillusioned do-gooder named Kate meets Jaap Hooft, a charismatic European film-maker who sees in the devastation wrought by the storm an opportunity to make a work of art about another disaster that struck Coney Island some hundred years before: the 1911 fire that started in the amusement park known as Dreamland, burning it to ashes from which it never arose.

TEENAGE DICK

TEENAGE DICK

Thursday, July 19

PUBLIC SHAKESPEARE PRESENTS: Wise Fools & Foolish Wits

Monday, July 23

From Erasmus to Mel Brooks, the wisdom of foolery – and the foolery of the wise – has made us laugh, and made us think. In this evening of readings, songs, and insightful commentary, CUNY professor of English Richard McCoy, joined by a motley troop of players, singers, and jig-makers, will offer a spirited look at the history and meaning of clowns and fools in Shakespeare. Together, we’ll explore the distinction between the rustic malaprop-loving “clowns” like Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing, professional court “allowed fools” like Feste in Twelfth Night, and Lear’s famously melancholy “bitter fool.” What do these sometimes lovable, sometimes needling, sometimes despairing figures bring to their plays? How does their truth-telling alongside their nonsense challenge the hierarchies of the dramatic worlds they inhabit and the values of the powerful individuals they mock?
