Mobile Unit

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Laurie Woolery

Prospero, a powerful magician and the rightful Duchess of Milan, has been usurped by her brother and has escaped to a remote and barren island. There, despite the unforgiving landscape, she has tried her best to make a home for her daughter, Miranda. When Prospero conjures a powerful storm to sink her brother’s ship, she must decide how to deal with him and his confederates, who have washed ashore. How will she exact her long awaited revenge? How do you satiate a desire for justice? Director of Public Works Laurie Woolery directs this Mobile Unit production that journeys across the five boroughs and The Public’s Astor Place home.

Mobile Unit is a reinvention of Joseph Papp’s Mobile Shakespeare program, beginning in 1957 with the simple idea that theater belongs to everyone, evolving into the New York Shakespeare Festival and ultimately becoming The Public Theater. Now in its eighth year, the Mobile Unit meets audiences where they are by presenting world-class Shakespeare and other works in recreation centers, prisons, senior centers, schools, and other community gathering places across the five boroughs. The Mobile Unit has already toured Henry V, The Winter’s Tale, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, The Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, Pericles, Measure for Measure, Richard III, and Much Ado About Nothing

Season 2018-2019

Mobile Unit - The Tempest

Okay, but what is clowning? We can all think of the scary Pennywise clowns – but what about the lauded and misunderstood theatrical art-form? This video, care of the American Theatre Wing, will help explain (and make you laugh, too).

If you know someone incarcerated, do them a favor for me.

Inmate Name ##inmate number##
Jail Adress St
Jail City
Jail state and Zip
Thats how you adress a letter to some one that you care about when they are locked up.

Love even behind bars and plates of glass, because every one needs love. That letter will mean so much to them. The worst part of the system is the isolating lonliness. If they give up on the outside, if they feel there’s nothing to cry about, they will be back. Give them someone to miss and something to follow the rules for. Save them.

The Mobile Unit

A really great reminder, for anyone out there who knows someone incarcerated: write to them. @chingybaby‘s post says it better than we could ever.
